Cuanki, A Warm Meal in Cold Bandung

One typical food in Bandung is cuanki. At glance, it looks like a bowl of meatball or batagor. The hawker usually hold these food around the village. One bowl of cuanki consist of white tofu stuffed with aci, dumplings, meatballs, boiled dumplings, fried dumplings, and fried meatballs. Differences with Bakso Malang, cuanki doe not use noodles. The savory sauce broth is clear, sprinkled with sliced scallions.


Make Money On Foot

Cuanki name is short of “cari uang jalan kaki” or “make money on foot“. It is because initially the food was sold on a hand carried or picked up while the seller walking from one place to another. As the time goes, recently many cuanki seller sell the food on a permanent stall. You do not need to be patient waiting for cuanki seller. In Bandung there are two famous cuanki vendor, named Cuanki Dara Kembar and Cuanki Serayu. Both stall has a same menu but Cuanki Dara Kembar use a hot bowl made from clay for the serving.


A serving of cuanki usually contain meatballs, dumplings, and tofu. All are served along with the warm sauce. For addition, there dumplings and also reuwazz, ie. dumplings stuffed with a hot chili. Reuwazz means a shock expressed after biting these dumplings. The price menu started from IDR 10,000 to IDR 20,000.


Established in 1990s, Cuanki Serayu owned by My. Kasno and open from 11.00 am to 7.00 pm. Now, Cuanki Serayu located at Jalan Serayu No. 2 near Jalan Martadinata or Jalan Riau. Other than there, Cuanki Serayu has two branches on Jalan Mangga and Jalan Cihapit. Every day they can sell up to 500 bowl of cuanki and 200 plate of batagor.


Although Cuanki Serayu has a small place, visitors always packed the stall. The delicious sauce and meatball, make these stall can close sooner than 7.00 pm. Come at 5.00 pm and you would be likely run out off the available menu. One serving of Cuanki Serayu contains six pieces of meatball and dumplings. While half portion contains only four pieces. The price for one serving is IDR 10,000 while for half is IDR 7,000. (original article here)
